Aromatherapy during pregnancy – Yes, essential oils are safe
Aromatherapy is safe during pregnancy, although more active oils should be avoided in the first trimester as a precautionary measure and some oils should only be used under the supervision of a qualified aromatherapist.
If essential oils are not used regularly before pregnancy, cypress, chamomile, marjoram and peppermint should be avoided unless they have a qualified specialist in aromatherapy.
Basil, cajeput, clary sage, cypress, mirha, niaouli and rosemary are all right in the second half of pregnancy but should not be used in earlier stages.
Better you're wrong on the side of caution and stick to the oil that is safely known. A small group of these oils can be left alone during pregnancy to ensure that no problems can occur.
Essential oils used during pregnancy include bergamot, black pepper, cedarwood, eucalyptus, incense, geranium, ginger, grapefruit, lavender, lemon, lime, mandarin, neroli, orange bitter, sweet orange, petitgrain, ravensara, rose geranium, rose otto, rosewood, sandalwood, fodorment, mandarin, tea tree and ylang ylang.
Another important note for mothers is that they only use half the normal dose. The normal dose for healthy adults is 8 drops, therefore only 4 drops of essential oil should be used (15 ml of carrier) during pregnancy.
If you want to use 3-4 oily mixtures, a good idea is to mix the oils in larger quantities for the first time, that is, every drop of 4 drops of 12-16 drops, then 4 drops of the actual blend.
