Aromatherapy, essential oils – How do they work?

What is aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is a holistic alternative treatment that uses plant extracts (known as essential oils) to change your personality, mood, cognitive function or health. Aromatherapy literally means "fragrance treatment". Essential oils are extracted aromatic essences of plants, flowers, trees, fruits, bark, grass and seeds that have distinctive therapeutic, psychological and physiological properties that improve health and prevent disease. About 150 essential oils exist. Most of these oils have antiseptic properties; some are antiviral, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antidepressant and emptying agents. Other properties of essential oils, which are preferred in aromatherapy, stimulation, relaxation, digestion and diuretic properties. To achieve the highest benefit from essential oils, you should be prepared from natural, pure raw materials. Synthetically produced oils do not work.

How does aromatherapy work?

We, as a human being, are able to distinguish 10,000 different odors. These smells come through cysts, fine hairs into the nose, into the limbic system that is part of the brain that regulates our moods, emotions, memory and learning. This can be demonstrated by measuring brainwave frequencies that affect different odors in many ways. An example of this may be the scent of lavender that increases alpha waves in the back of the head for relaxation. Another example is the fraction of Jasmine that increases the beta waves at the beginning of the head, which is linked to a more alarmed state.

Where did aromatherapy come from?

Aromatherapy has been practiced since antiquity. The actual date of aromatherapy is debatable first. Most experts claim that ancient Egyptians were the first to carry out aromatherapy. The ancient Egyptians have recognized the physical and spiritual properties of these oils and are used in their daily lives. Egyptians used oils in mummification processes and were aware of the healing properties of many of these oils. The victims were "healers" who mixed and dropped medicated drinks.

In biblical times, aromatic plants and essential oils were used. Think about the gifts of newborns. Vegetable oils are mentioned several times in the Bible. During the fifteenth century, people in Europe began using essential oils to cover up their body odor and protect the disease. The French chemist Dr. René-Maurice Gattefossé is the "father" of modern day aromatherapy. Gattefosse was the first to use "aromatherapy" in 1928. French physicist Dr.Jean Valnet had a great influence on the findings of Gattefoss and the use of essential oils in the II. Marguerite Maury, an Austrian biochemist, studied the rejuvenating power and cosmetic use of essential oils. These three men reproduced aromatherapy in the twenty centuries.

What kind of aromatherapy can be used?

Skin Care:
Aromatherapy can be used for acne using Rosemary and Geranium, eczema with chamomile, dry or cracked skin using Rose, Lavender and Neroli. Oily skin, insect bites, athlete's foot and fungal infections can be treated with Tea Tree.

Respiratory diseases:
Aromatherapy can be used in respiratory diseases such as eucalyptus, lavender, timam and peppermint. Bronchitis, cough, sore throat, frequent cold, flu and nasal congestion that may be the result of allergies. Eucalyptus, rosemary, chamomile and peppermint.

Oral Hygiene:
Aromatherapy can be used as a mouthwash for Myrrh or dental prostheses using Cloves.

Injury and Pain:
Headaches can use peppermint and rosemary, migraines, arthritis and joint pains can be used with Anise, black pepper, monkey and ginger. Massage with essential oils added to massage oils in the hind legs is very effective.

Mental Health:
Aromatherapy is very effective in alleviating stress and fatigue by using grapefruit or anti-depressants with Basil, Kamilla, Grapefruit, Rose or Ylang Ylang. For sorrow Rose and biggrass are very effective. Aromatherapy is reassuring with Chamomiles. Lavender, Chamomile and Neroli's relaxing effect are particularly effective for those suffering from insomnia. Incense is wonderful for meditation, Rosemary serves to enhance memory, and some people feel that this is an aphrodisiac. It helps women with PMS (premenstrual syndrome) problems and can help digestion.

Old Age:
Nursing Homes and Health Care Facilities Aromatherapy is used to treat Alzheimer's disease with Bergamot and Lavender. Other aging health problems such as memory problems can be treated with Rosemary, Bergamot, Lavender and Ylang Ylang, and nervous legs using Bergamot and Lavender.

Where is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy throughout the world is homeopathic, ayurvedic, Chinese medicine, herbal medicine and naturopathy specialists. It can be used alone or for several "traditional" medicines. It is always advisable to consult a qualified therapist before using essential oils.
